Card Swap Group - 5

I can't believe it's August already!  My blogging hasn't improved since I've been on holiday.  My grand plans of all day card making haven't materialised either. To be honest I really didn't get much done last week at all - probably because I was laid low with a summer cold.  However I am feeling much brighter now, and much more motivated.  I want to get ahead of all the birthdays over the next few months, and I have a lot to make.  I've also made a start on . . .  wait for it . . . Christmas cards!!!  I know!  I don't even like to use the C word before October, but last year I was so panicked and ran out of time, that I don't want a rerun of that this year.  I won't share them yet though, it's far to early for that!

 

I am finally getting around to share the Card Swap Group cards for last month.  The task was to make a card no bigger than 4" x 4".  My card was made by the lovely Jane, and I really like the simplicity of it.  The colour is Calypso Coral, which is a favourite of mine.  I like the embossed frame around the aperture, and the little stamped image is really sweet.  Thanks Jane.

 

Here is the card I made for Sue.  My favourite SU stamp set of the moment is the Six Sided Sampler with the co-ordinating hexagon punch.  I am sure I have mentioned this once or twice recently!  I used two of the new In-Colours - Pistachio Pudding and Coastal Cabana, and the butterflies are from Papillon Potpourri.  I can't remember which set the sentiment is from.  A few diamantes were added for a little bit of bling.

Because I liked the card so much, I made a couple more in a different colour way - Strawberry Slush and Baked Brown Sugar.

This month's swap is a little bit different - we have to make a bookmark or a tag.  I've got a few ideas bubbling around but nothing definite at the moment.  I'm thinking I'll make a tag but that could all change!

I have spent quite a lot of time reading this last week.  My friend has got me totally hooked on The Game of Thrones series of books.  I didn't think they would be my cup of tea - but I couldn't be more wrong - I can't put them down!  I can't recommend them highly enough.

Craft Fair Goodies

Morning all.  Phew, it's been quite a busy weekend in the Frecklepuss household this weekend - well mainly for me actually.  With just one week to go before my craft fair, I have been frantically trying to get everything finished off and packaged.  I'm now finally able to show you some of my creations.

These six packs of cards are my new designs of note cards.  Apologies for the quality of the photo.

Here are all the note cards in more detail.  For this first one, I used some paper that was a free gift from a magazine. These free papers are ideal for this sort of thing.  I made a paper ribbon from black card stock and punched the tag from my new EK Success punch (a really useful one).  The sentiment is stamped from a pack of clear stamps I have had for a while - not sure who they are by.

This next set is very Cath Kidston-esque!  The papers were another free gift, but they are actually from Craftwork Cards.  A bit too floral for me personally but ideal for this look.

I used up scraps from one of my all time favourite paper stacks - Making Memories Boho Chic.  This nine square style is so easy to make, but very effective.  I finished it off with some Prima flowers and a little bit of bling.

Another Cath Kidston inspired look, same papers as before.  The scalloped edges are punched with my favourite Fiskars punches.

Again. more free papers and Fiskars scalloped punch.  The daisy is a Martha Stewart punch which I haven't used nearly enough.  The sentiment is from a Marion Emberson set of stamps.  I added a touch of glitter glue in the centre of the flowers.

And finally, same as above really except that I added a couple of Petaloo flowers as a focal point.  I think the sentiment is a Paula Pascual stamp.

These kept me busy for a while as I had to make five of each design.  I have made matching notebooks which I will show you another day.

I did find time to go to the cinema to see the next instalment of the Twilight Saga - Breaking Dawn Part 1.  I had booked the tickets weeks ago because I wanted to see it the weekend it was released.  It was a great film and now I can't wait for Part 2.  I will probably have to read the books again soon (have lost count of how many times I have read them!).

I am definitely Team Edward - even before I saw Robert Pattinson in the role.  Mark is very tolerant of my obsession thank goodness!

Well off to get back to the mundane jobs such as washing and ironing - the penance for yesterday I guess.  Have fun!

Bits and Bobs

Evening!  Well what a busy old week it's been this week.  I've made quite a few cards, been shopping quite a few times, been to the cinema, out for tea and walked the dog plenty.  Not to mention the boring chores of washing and ironing and planning meals.  I'm feeling pretty pooped to be honest.

Today Mark and I took Emily to Lakeside to buy clothes for 6th Form - not my favourite thing, shopping, but needs must.  Emily has had a rough old time in the last few  months and we did doubt that she would be able to go to 6th Form, but she is determined to give it a go.  So she needed kitting out.  Lots of clothes were tried on, a good many of them were discarded but we came home with quite a few shirts, trousers and cardigans, plus boots and a bag.  My bank account has taken quite a battering (the Ally Pally fund!!) but it will be worth it on Tuesday if she goes to school.

I wanted to share with you the card I made Mark for our Wedding Anniversary last week.  I've been meaning to post it on the challenge blog Less is More but haven't quite plucked up the courage.  I am running out of time for that one of my holiday goals, so I hope the challenge tomorrow is one I fancy!  Anyway, back to the card, it's a bit different to my usual style.  I inked all around the edge with Barn Door Distress Ink, and around the outside of the elements.  I also used Barn Door to stamp the heart border and hearts on the sentiment (which is a Paula Pascual stamp).  The main element is from a set of stamps by Marion Emberson - you know I am such a fan.  The grosgrain ribbon was from my huge (and I am not joking) collection of ribbon and the "Just For You" sentiment is from Craftwork Cards.  I wasn't too sure of the finished card at first, but I've come round to it.  Mark liked it anyway.

This next card is another departure for me too.  I'm not such a fan of cute images and rarely use them on my cards, but what can you do when you have to make a card for a 2 year old boy?  I don't really have any stash that fits the bill, until I remembered this set of paper that was a free gift from Scrapbook Magazine.  I thought the pirate boy was perfect.  I cut it out and used a strip of the waves backing paper, plus a little bit of plain card stock from DCWV and Bob's your uncle!  The button embellishments were part of the paper pack too and fit in quite nicely.

Have any of you read this book - One Day by David Nicholls?  If you haven't, I can't recommend it highly enough.  I couldn't put it down and was reading it every available minute of the day (just as well I am on holiday!).  I am toying with the idea of going to see the film version, but I have a feeling I may be disappointed - I hope Anne Hathaway can carry off a convincing Yorkshire accent.  We'll see.

Talking of the cinema, we took Emily to see The Inbetweeners film on Wednesday while Edward has been staying with my parents for a few days.  The film was very funny but SO rude!  If you are easily shocked, I wouldn't recommend it.  It is all about four 18 year old boys on holiday in Greece and nothing is left to the imagination!

I'm off to have a facial first thing in the morning - using a voucher that the children bought me for Mother's Day - and I'm really looking forward to feeling pampered.

Cheers!

Just enjoying a glass or two of champagne to celebrate my 17th Wedding Anniversary.  Mark is cooking a sumptious meal (his choice, I suggested a takeaway) of scallops to start and posh sausages and puy lentils for the main course.  I've had quite a chilled day.  Haven't done anything special but it has been lovely all the same.

I've been trying to break the back of all the birthday cards I need for September.  They pretty much all have to be different as most of them are for people I work with.  I also have an order for three special cards to complete in the next week (typically I have left this until the last minute).  I have really enjoyed my card making today as I don't feel under any pressure.  I'll be showing you these over the next week - they are awaiting scanning.

I've also started to organise my crafting area too, little by little.  I've got an A5 Notebook and I have written down all the colours of my inks, ink pads, Glimmer Mists, Promarkers etc to avoid duplication when I go to stamp shows (in readiness for Ally Pally at the end of September!).  I've also noted down my Nestabilities, Cuttlebug embossing folders, clear stamp sets etc.  It's jolly useful and reminds you what you have.

Here are a few Christmas cards that I made recently.  They are all the same design, just different colour combinations.  As usual - all products are Craftwork Cards.  (Sorry the cards are a bit wonky - you just can't get the staff these days!!).

Super Cute Felt

Just wanted to share with you this lovely book that has just arrived from Amazon.  It's truly amazing!  I'm really taken with the magenta and coral flower brooch that's on the front cover - it's so pretty.  It's full of gorgeous projects.

The problem is, it's another hobby - to go with the card making and paper crafts, the crochet, baking etc, which means more paraphernalia!!  Mark will go nuts!  He's already fed up with my card making stash taking over the house.  We'll have to keep this one secret from him lol!

MIMM 1

Or ME in my MoleskinE, but that's too long to keep typing. So from now on it's MIMM!

I have really enjoyed working on this journal. It has taken me completely out of my comfort zone as I am not a messy card maker as a rule. I don't generally get inky, painty fingers - but I have really relaxed and got into this. It was liberating!

Kirsty Wiseman, who devised the kit, provides a very detailed instruction manual, as well as a how-to video on UStream. There's also a private Flickr group so that you can see how other people have personalised their books. I did adjust a couple of things to suit myself - changed some of the colours and added more drawings, etc.

So today I am showing you the front cover, complete with faux coffee cup stain!

The inside cover has a tag with the date so that when I look back in years to come I will know when I created it. The first page deals with the basics, name age, photo etc. I'm really taken with the idea of using torn up book print - would never have thought of it myself. Of course it does go against the grain ripping up a book, but I chose a trashy charity shop book that I didn't like!

Page 2 and 3 are about my clothes (what I prefer to wear, my dream outfit), my body (best bits, worst bits), and things I would change.

I particularly like the border, it took a while to do but I think it's very effective. It was supposed to be a chequerboard effect but I didn't like it.

The next two pages are about my hair and skin. That isn't really my dream hairstyle (don't have one) although the colour is a bit cool!

Between each page I have made a pocket and there will be tags in each with more personal details (not for sharing though!), but I've yet to do those.

For colouring the pages I have used a selection of Distress ink pads, Glimmer Mists and some spray inks from the Dylusions range (Art from the Heart).

I'm very proud of it and look forward to sharing more with you soon.

Summer Reading

I've just finished reading this book - Water for Elephants. It's a cracking read and I can't recommend it enough. The story is set on a circus train in 1931, and is about a young vet named Jacob, a circus performer called Marlena and an elephant called Rosie. It's a beautiful, yet sometimes cruel story - well worth giving it a go. I couldn't put it down.

The film is pretty good too (Robert Pattison is in it - he makes it very watchable!).

What to read next though? I've got a couple of light hearted romantic novels on my bedside table, including the new Shopaholic one. Maybe I should read something a bit more substantial, but I don't know if I'm in the mood for a more serious book at the moment. Any recommendations?

And so it all came to an end

I was so excited yesterday - the opening day of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (I can't stand HP7 Part 2 - is it me? I guess it is!!). We had tickets booked for the 5.30pm show - I've never been to a film the day it opens - man, the cinema was heaving! We took our own 3D glasses, although I did succumb and buy the kids the special Harry Potter ones - I must be mad!

I'm a massive Harry Potter fan - I think the books are marvellous and they have moved me tears on numerous occasions, as well as being gripped and sitting on the edge of my seat. I love the films too, I think they have been sensitively done, and I guess that's because J K Rowling has been a big part of the production. Last night the four of us all had feelings of trepidation in case the end was a let down, but we needn't have worried - it was marvellous! The time just flew by, the glasses didn't bother me too much (such a pain if you usually wear glasses as I do), we cheered, we clapped and we cried. The end of an era - what to do now? I know, read the whole series again and preorder the DVD!

P.S. Counting down - 5 more work days to go - hurrah!

Stuff I hope everyone had a relaxing Mothers' Day on Sunday. I can't say my weekend was relaxing in the slightest - we had so much to pack in that we were absolutely exhausted by the time Sunday evening came along. Having said that, it was quite a nice weekend, but I am looking forward to this one, which will hopefully be quieter. My children bought me a beauty voucher (Emily's idea, bless her), some Promarkers and a box of chocolates, so I felt very spoilt. I also had a cup of coffee and a biscuit brought to me in bed. This is the card I made for my mum. It's the first time I have had a go at an easel card (don't think it's clear from the photo), and I really enjoyed it, although it took me a long time to get it right. All the materials are from Craftwork Cards - you know I am such a big fan. It was good for me to have a go at something new, as I have been feeling that my card making has been stagnating of late. I have been making the same design, just in different colourways - it's all those 50th and 80th cards I've been making recently, I just went for the easy option. I'm feeling happy with my reading choices at the moment. Fiona Walker has released her new book in paperback and I snapped it up in Tesco on Saturday evening and am a good way through it already. The trouble is that I would rather read it than go to work, so am feeling a bit resentful at the moment - roll on Friday at 2pm when we finish for the Easter Holidays!

I love her books, particularly the ones about horses, eventing etc (even though I'm not horsey at all!!). They are a bit racy and make me laugh - pure escapism.

Well three more days to go. Parents' evening at Edward's school tomorrow - our first one at his secondary school. I've also got to make some chocolate cornflake nest cakes for the children in my class, for Easter, so there's no time to relax just yet!

Room

I know I have mentioned this book before but now I have read it (unputdownable!!) - I just wanted to urge people to give it a go.

It's about a boy and his mother who live together in a room that is 11 feet square. The boy is five years old and has only known the room his whole life. It is written from the boy's point of view and in the language of a five year old. Don't let that put you off, as the story unfolds you will just want to keep reading - I read it in two days. I can't tell you anymore as it would spoil the story for you. I'd love to know if anyone else has read it and what you think.

Hope everyone is well. We've been a bit poorly in the Frecklepuss household. I've had the grottiest cold which has lingered on and on, and which I have kindly passed on to both children!! I was brought up to share - what can I say!

Oh by the way - I've finished crocheting all the rows of the dream blanket. Have sewn in 192 ends and am waiting for the border colours to arrive - I wish they would hurry up!!

Midweek catch up

Hope everyone is having a good week. I've been at home the last two days as Emily is not well, but hopefully on the mend. I am now starting with a cold but shall try to ignore it as I don't have time to be ill!

My week of planned meals is going very well, and certainly makes life a little bit less stressful. The Alsace chicken was delicious on Sunday (roast chicken with lemon juice and tarragon, with a cream, garlic and white wine sauce), and we had plenty left over for Monday with cold chicken, chips and a fried egg - simple, but so yummy. Yesterday was hoisin pork and pancakes, and tonight will be chicken in tomato and basil sauce with pasta. Is your mouth watering yet?!

Dream Blanket update - only got two more colours to crochet and then it's just the border. Have ordered the colours for that today, as well as ten colours than Emily has chosen for her own Dream Blanket, which thankfully will be half the size of mine (it's soooooo heavy now!!).

Have finally finished reading the whole Harry Potter series, which I started just before Christmas. I have to admit to shedding a tear or two, as once again, it's all over (until I read the series again!)


I started my new book last night, Room by Emma Donoghue. Not too sure what to make of it at the moment, but it's early days. I'm trying to second guess what is going to happen but I'm not going to say because I know a couple of other bloggers are about to read it too.

This Sunday it's the Stamperama show at Stevenage which is not too far from where I live. I usually go, but not this year as I am saving my pennies for the Alexandra Palace show in April. I feel sad that I am not going and hope that I won't weaken on Sunday morning - but I must be strong, I must be strong (if I repeat it enough, will I start to believe it??!!).

Wuthering Heights

Last week I decided to undertake one of my holiday tasks and read Wuthering Heights. Not without trepidation I might add - suppose I didn't like it, or found it too hard going. I hate giving up on books and I was imagining it taking me weeks to plough through it. Also, I didn't have a crisp new Penguin Classic, no not me.

This is my copy of the book. It's so old that the cover has come away from the rest of the book, and the pages are so brittle that they kept cracking. The type is really small and it made it very hard to read. I don't even know where I got this book from, all I know is that I have had it for years and never read it.

Until now that is . . . and I must say, I couldn't put it down. Why haven't I read it before? I can't really explain why I like it - the characters aren't even very nice. I didn't have much sympathy for Cathy and Heathcliffe, and even Catherine and Linton came across as quite bratty - but there is something about that book that is quite compulsive. I know what I will read it again at some point (although I might invest in a crisp, shiny new book!).

The rest of the holiday tasks are coming a long quite nicely. Edward's room is done and I'm very happy about how that went. Just need to get his desk sorted after we come back from our holiday. I've had a bit of a card making session last week, but am hoping to get some more done this week. My blanket is looking great. I'm just finishing up the last few squares and then I've got the edging to do. The only thing I haven't done is the Menu Planner, and quite frankly that's the hardest job of all. My children are really fussy and generally I can plan a meal for three of us and there is always one person who won't eat it - usually Edward. Heigh ho!

Birthday Presents

After a hectic weekend celebrating Emily's birthday, I celebrated mine on Monday. I had a lovely day despite having to go to work. I had lots of lovely presents from Mark, the children and family and friends - I felt very spoiled. I made over 70 cupcakes over the weekend to take into work - some for the children in my class and the rest for the staff (I never want to see a cupcake again!!!). But at least they disappeared quickly! The children in my class made a big fuss of me and I really felt the love!

Here are some of the presents I received. My Mum and Dad bought me the Promarkers which I have been keen to try out for some time.

Mark bought me three of these Nestabilities and my parents bought the other. I'm getting quite a collection now and I've even got my Mum interested and she's just bought herself a Cuttlebug.

A couple of new Momiji dolls to add to my collection (from the children).

And some new books. The first two (fromthe children too) are by authors I love, so I'm quite keen to start reading them. The second group are from a friend who knows I love to read and we discussed these books recently. She highly recommends them so I hope I like them. Has anyone else read them? I'd be interested to know your opinion.

I was also lucky enough to get some money, so I've ordered some more Promarkers and will probably get some more wool for my new Granny Squares blanket that has ground to a halt at the moment.

I'm hugely excited about the weekend because I have tickets to see Eclipse - the third in the Twilight Saga. It's not officially released until the 9th, but I managed to get tickets for the preview weekend - I can't wait!

Favourite Books

I've been pondering today about making a list of my top ten books of all time and have decided that it is an impossible task! I've been an avid since I was a child - always a book in hand, often reading til the early hours - how can I possibly narrow it down to just 10 books? I have favourite books to suit my mood, old favourites that bring me comfort or a bit of nostalgia, some that just make me laugh out loud, some that are pure escapism and some that make me cry. Here are just a selection of books, or just authors that have given me pleasure over the years (in no particular order).

1. The Chalet School series by Elinor M Brent Dyer. I started reading this school series when I was about 11 and was really enchanted with the setting - the Austrian Tirol. I managed to buy about 30 books in the series with no idea really of how many were still left to get. I revisited these books about 8 or 9 years ago and discovered that there were 62 (!!) in the whole set - wow. I now own all 62 and have had lots of pleasure reading the whole series from start to finish. I dream of passing them on to my daughter but sadly she has absolutely no interest in them!


2. As a child I was a fan of all things Enid Blyton. I absolutely loved the Famous Five and the Secret Seven, as well as Mallory Towers and St Clares. The Faraway Tree books were also enjoyed, plus various mystery and adventure stories.


3. I really enjoy "Chick-Lit" - it's pure escapism. Anything by Fiona Walker, Jill Mansell, Jane Green, Freya North, Elizabeth Noble, Sophie Kinsella, Marian Keyes et al.


4. Anyone who knows me, knows I am obsessed with the Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer. I try to convert everyone I can! You are either Team Edward or Team Jacob and I am firmly Team Edward - read them and decide for yourself.


5. I've always been a Jane Austen fan - even before Colin Firth came out of the pond in his white shirt! My favourite is of course Pride and Prejudice, but I love Emma too, as well as Sense and Sensibility.


6. Some recent books that I have enjoyed immensely (if that's the right word) - The Kite Runner, The Time Traveller's Wife, My Daughter's Keeper, The Lovely Bones, Sacred Hearts, Star of the Sea and Wedlock.


7. One of my all time favourites - Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell. I first read this when I was 12 and devoured it in just 4 days. I love reading about that time in history and who can help falling in love with Rhett Butler!


8. The Harry Potter series - I adore these books and frequently read them. I cried at the end of The Half-Blood Prince and was on the edge of my seat during The Deathly Hallows, desperate not to be let down by the ending (which I wasn't!).


9. Watership Down - always makes me cry. Those rabbits really got to me!


10. And finally - anything that is recommend to me. My son often suggests I read some of his books - which I do. I really enjoyed the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz. I have recently read Holes by Louis Sachar at Edward's instigation and will probably read the Percy Jackson books after reading some to Edward in the bath the other night.

Yesterday

I took the children to the cinema to see Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. It was only supposed to be Edward and I because I thought Emily wasn't interested, but she surprised me as usual! Edward has been desperate to see the film for ages - well ever since he read the book (he wants the rest of the series for his birthday). We had to go to a cinema that I don't usually go to because that was the only place it was showing. What a serendipitous moment - who knew about Kids Club??!! I didn't. £2.50 each child and adults go free - now that's what I call a result!

It was a great film - we all really enjoyed it. Edward pretty much grinned the whole way through it. He's very keen on Greek myths so it was right up his street and Emily thought the actor who played Percy was cute!

I was persuaded to have lunch at Frankie and Benny's afterwards - Emily's favourite place. It was pretty good too. All in all we had a lovely day - it made a change to get out and do something with the children, it seems like a while since we have done something like this.

Still no crafting - I'm feeling really sad about that. I usually have a couple of days to myself during school holidays to get creative but sadly not these holidays. I'm actually getting quite desperate as I have birthdays coming up next week and I really need to make some cards.

On the decorating front, whilst the room is not finished, we are getting there. One of the long walls is completely finished and we have been able to put our big Ikea units back. I spent a lot of Monday unpacking 10 huge crates of my books. Mark is now working on the side of the room where all my craft stuff lives so I am hopeful that by the weekend I can start putting that away soon. (so is Emily as it is cluttering up her bedroom at the moment!!).

I'm really looking forward to having my "ta-dah" moment but I fear it will be a while. We still have to retrieve the rest of our possessions from my parents and Mark's mum. I think it will take a while to unpack it all - I wish I had another week off.

P.S Finally succumbed to rereading Twilight again - just can't help myself!!

Books

Still no crafting - I am definitely getting withdrawal symptoms. I can't actually get to my table at the moment as it is buried under dust sheets, and tomorrow I have to pack all my crafts bits away (well the stuff that's in the dining room anyway) so that Mark can finish laying the floor.

Talking of which, the floor looks amazing!!!!! I can't even remember what the old carpet looked like - a rather dim and distant memory! Hopefully there will be some colour going up on the walls soon. Had a bit of a problem with the paint this week - we went to B&Q on BH Monday (that was fun!) and chose a colour called Stepping Stone but when we tested it out I didn't like it. Much too dark. So Mark went back to B&Q and swapped it for Duck Egg which is much better, maybe a tad too light, but very nice. Emily doesn't like it though - she wanted a really bright blue.

So, as I have no cards to show you,or crochet, I thought I would mention some books I have read recently.

I have just finished reading a superb book called The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time written from the point of view of a teenage boy with Asperger's Syndrome. Very readable - funny, sad and it gives you a real insight to how a sufferer of Asperger's thinks.

Another book I have recently enjoyed is Wedlock. It's a historical biography that reads like a novel. It's about a woman - Mary Eleanor Bowes - and her violent marriage. The book is set in the 18th Century. I'm not really into biographies but it was recommend by the Channel 4 Book Club and it really interested me. It took a little while to get into it, but then I couldn't put it down.

The Time Traveler's Wife, one of my favourite books. A book I know I will reread a lot. I think it's like Marmite - you either love it or hate it.

The Lovely Bones - not a comfortable read, but I did enjoy it (if enjoy is the right word). I'm not sure that I would enjoy the film - have seen the trailers and am not sure. Maybe I should give it the benefit of the doubt.

Finally - I gave in and read My Sister's Keeper after lots of talk about it at work. I had watched the film first, but the book is so much better - it actually made me gasp out loud at one point.

My current book is Holes by Louis Sachar recommended to me by my son. We have it at the school where I work - it's used as a Group Read book to provoke discussion in Year 5 and Year 6 children. I'm really enjoying it. so Edward will be happy when I tell him.

I think I must be due to reread the Twilight series soon - it's been a while (well a couple of months!!).
